AAUW is a leader in the effort to interest more young girls in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Tech Trek camp is a week-long summer STEM camp for girls who are entering the eighth grade, held on two Florida college campuses.
The girls are nominated by their math or science teachers, write an essay about their interest in STEM, and after an interview process with our branch, campers are selected to attend Tech Trek.
At camp, the girls live in campus dorms, eat their meals in the student cafeteria, utilize university classrooms and labs for their core classes and workshops – such as Structural Engineering. Neuroscience and Marine Biology – and attend a professional STEM women’s dinner.
The Gainesville branch works hard to fundraise to cover the cost of Tech Trek for the girls from Alachua County. Families pay only a $50 fee to send a girl to camp so that girls from a wide range of backgrounds are able to attend.
